Avro Anson

AVRO ANSON  photo submitted by H.D. Teeple

The ubiquitous Anson was initially designed by Avro as a civilian six passenger commercial transport in 1935. A military development entered Royal Air Force service in 1936 as a coastal patrol and reconnaissance aircraft. It had the distinction of being  the first monoplane with retractable landing gear in service with the RAF.

By the time war broke out, the Anson was considered obsolete for its primary role, but its value as a trainer was soon recognized. It quickly became the backbone of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan as a multi-engine trainer and light transport. More than 11,000 were ultimately produced, some 1000 of them in Canada for the RCAF.

After the war, many of them were used by civilian operations, many still flew into the eighties.
