| the Avro Arrow a uniquely Canadian Triumph - and Tragedy
"The Avro Arrow" ...Illustration by Lance Russwurm,©2000 by Labusch Skywear The famed Avro Arrow took the Canadian aviation industry to both its highest highs and its lowest lows. Bitterness, disbelief, and debate still linger on today, more than forty years after the project was terminated. At the time, there was absolutely no doubt that the Arrow was the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world. Its cancellation was senseless enough....but the truly mind-boggling aspect was the government's order for the subsequent total destruction of the existing airframes along with all the research records and blueprints...all this AFTER the aircraft had proved itself more than capable of fulfilling its intended role and when sales and profitability seemed assured at last. The AVRO company had already suffered from governmental idiocy...(see..The Jetliner) That time, it had been The Liberals ....This time it was the turn of the Progressive Conservatives to prove that intelligence was still in short supply in high places. Our indigenous aviation industry has never returned to the heights it had achieved by the late fifties.....a time when we were world leaders. |
