Memphis Belle Visits Brantford BRANTFORD, ONTARIO, April 2, 2002- The Boeing B-17G that played the role of the famous "Memphis Belle" in the 1989 movie of the same name is visiting Brantford Airport for an extended stay. It will be receiving servicing by Goderich Aircraft Inc. It landed here Thursday, after performing at an air show in Georgia. The U.S. Government has issued a directive involving possible problems with the wing attachment points on B-17s, so the wings must be removed and the potential problem spots inspected before it can be flown again.
The aircraft will be on display for visitors outside at the airport for about a week before it goes inside for the work to be done. This aircraft is owned by a private individual from California. It is not the real "Memphis Belle", of course....THAT aircraft (a B-17F) is on display in (where else?) Memphis, Tennesee, where it is maintained by the Memphis Belle Memorial Association. The original was the first American Bomber in World War 2 to survive 25 missions with her crew intact. The aircraft in Brantford is actually a B-17G built in 1944, but it still wears its 1942 style Hollywood paint job from the film.
