The Messerschmitt BF 109 is the second most produced aircraft ever, over 33,000 having been built. Only the Soviet Ilyushin 'Shturmovik' saw more examples made with over 41,000 examples of these having been pumped out by the war's end.

Unwanted by the German high command at first, the Bf-109 went on to be Germany's mainstay fighter, serving in many different capacities. Its first trials were in 1936, it drew its first blood in the Spanish Civil War and remained a potent weapon until the end of the war. After WW2, various countries around the world continued to use it, the Spanish Air Force finally phasing it out in 1967!
