REMEMBER THE STIRLINGThe Short Stirling (image) was the first of the RAF's trio of four engine bombers. It was 18 feet longer than the Lancaster and had a wing span of 100 feet. Designed in 1936 it first became operational in 1941. In the early years of the war the Stirling was the RAF's main heavy bomber. Design and construction of the Stirling was a massive project. The various construction phases of this giant bomber are shown in detail as an aircraft is followed down the assembly line. The video features historical footage, such as a Stirling raid in 1942 against the Renault factory at Billancourt near Paris. Also shown is a flight with a Stirling on a typical night bombing raid on Duisburg: pre-flight briefing, take-off, flight to target, bombing, hit by flak, and return to base. There are also interviews with former Stirling crew members. Later in the war the Stirling was used mainly as a glider tow plane and transport for dropping food and arms to the Resistance. The video also shows the Stirling involvement in the D-Day operations and glider assault at Arnhem. B&W and Colour, 55 minutes, #V017.....$29.95 Canadian |
