A new book about the late Canadian Spitfire
pilot Charley Fox 1920
- 2008
"The Day of the Flying Fox" by Steve
Pitt
Only $20.
ISBN13: 9781550028089
Width: 8 Inches
Height: 8 Inches
Pages: 152
Format: Paperback
Publisher: Dundurn Press
Canadian World War II pilot Charley Fox, who recently passed away, at the age
of 88, had a
thrilling life, especially on the day in July 1944 in France when he spotted a
black staff car, the kind usually employed to drive high-ranking Third Reich
dignitaries. Already noted for his skill in dive-bombing and strafing the enemy,
Fox went in to attack the automobile. As it turned out, the car contained famed
German General Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, and Charley succeeded in wounding
him.
Rommel, who at the time was the Germans' supreme military commander in France
orchestrating the Nazis' resistance to the D-day invasion, was never the same
after that. Author Steve Pitt focuses on this seminal event in Charley Fox's
life and in the war, but he also provides fascinating aspects of the period,
including profiles of noted ace pilots Buzz Beurling and Billy Bishop, Jr., and
Great Escape architect Walter Floody, as well as sidebars about Hurricanes,
Spitfires, and Messerschmitts.
Author
Steve Pitt's first children's book, Rain Tonight: A Tale of Hurricane Hazel,
was nominated for the Silver Birch, Red Cedar, and Rocky Mountain Awards.
Recently, he published To Stand and Fight Together: Richard Pierpoint and the
Coloured Corps of Upper Canada. He lives in Toronto.

COLD WAR TECH
WAR
The Politics of America's Air Defense
by Randall Whitcomb
Cold War Tech War explores the geo-political, technical and economic aspects
of the Avro Canada story. Author Randall Whitcomb reveals for the first time
anywhere several exciting design proposals of the Avro company while putting
the company and its technology into an international context.
Global intelligence angles are explored from pre-WW II through the Cold War
period. Focus is on bi-lateral issues with the Americans, with some
pertinent American statesmen and industrialists receiving special attention
for their roles in issues at the heart of our story. Recently released
official information on the Avro C-102 Jetliner and CF-105 Arrow present
their cancellations in a new light. Over a half-Century of deception by
various governments, intelligence agencies and individuals is documented and
given relevance in view of today's geo-political mileau. As in the author's
first book, Avro's engineering is shown to have been visionary--and still
inspiring in the 21st Century.
